Caution: When choosing a boat training provider, look beyond the advertised price. Some schools charge additional fees if you need to resit your assessment—ours is free. Others may promise training at any boat ramp at any time, only to change the location at the last minute due to assessor availability or other issues. Note: There is a $36.90 Department of Transport fee for every Recreational Skipper’s Ticket in Western Australia that we must collect off you for the Department of Transport. This is payable at the end of the course once you have passed.
Mandurah and the South West of WA Recreational Skippers Ticket Provider
Born and bred in Perth, Pete is a former professional fisherman who has skippered multiple vessels in various industries commercially around Australia before returning home to Perth to raise a family. In 2006, he became one of Western Australia’s first Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST) Assessors, helping shape the next generation of safe and confident boaters.
For the past seven years, Pete has been the Training Coordinator for the Australian Boating College in Western Australia, overseeing and mentoring our team of assessors. Every assessor is personally selected and trained by Pete to ensure they meet the high standards our students expect. Not everyone makes the cut, because we’re committed to delivering what we believe is the best boating training experience in WA through a proven, easy-to-follow system in a relaxed, low-pressure learning environment.
After more than 20 years in the industry, training over 9,000 students and mentoring more than 40 assessors, Pete still enjoys getting out on the water and helping new skippers build their confidence. While administration comes with the role, nothing beats being on the boat and sharing decades of practical knowledge and real-world experience.

About the Recreational Skipper's Ticket Training & Assessment Process
Getting your skippers ticket is a straight forward process with Australian Boating College.
To get the skippers ticket, you will need to pass a theory test and a practical assessment.
The theory test consists of 40 multiple choice questions. You need to obtain a result of at least 34/40 to pass. You may re-sit the test on the same day if you get between 30 and 33 out of 40. If you get less than 30/40, you will not be able to re-sit the theory assessment on the same day. You will need to re-book for another day.
You will not need to pay extra if you require another attempt!
The practical assessment consists of 11 on water tasks. With ABC, we will not just assess you, but provide you with comprehensive boat training on the day to ensure you have the best chance at passing! Driving a boat is relatively straight forward, but to best prepare you for the assessment, your instructor will walk you through each task, and you will have the opportunity to practice each task until you are confident. You will also have the opportunity to develop your general boat handling skills.
Getting your recreational skippers ticket is easy with ABC!
1. Book your course to access our online training course. Complete this at home to be well prepared for the theory
2. Attend your course, where we’ll start with some quick theory revision and then your theory assessment.
3. If you pass, you’ll come straight out on the boat, complete your practice and training, then do your practical assessment!
A full course can be completed in few hours in the morning, or afternoon!
Once passed, ABC will take care of your application with DOT. You will pay a fee of $36.90 to DOT for them to process your licence. On the day, we’ll give you an interim ticket, so you can get on the water straight away. Your physical skippers ticket will be sent to your address by the Department of Transport.
